Exodus 34:14-16 (MSG)
13-16 “Tear down their altars, smash their phallic pillars, chop down their fertility poles. Don’t worship any other god. God—his name is The-Jealous-One—is a jealous God.
New Christians sometimes struggle when they hear the concept that we serve a “Jealous God.” Exodus 20:5 (Part of the 10 Commandments) says:
…you shall not bow down to them nor serve them. For I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God…
I believe we struggle with it because our jealousy comes from a completely different place. Our jealous comes from our bitterness and attitude that “I deserve better than the other person.” However, His jealousy comes from the fact that He is the best for us, and that He deserves it (period). Those other idols (finding identity in relationships, money, success, sex, control, etc.) in our lives can’t offer what He offers.
He deserves every part/department of our lives. He requires complete surrender. I can’t bow my knee physically, without surrendering my heart completely. We can’t compartmentalize our surrender to Jesus. It has to be all or nothing…and not that we can earn His favor or salvation, but because Christ deserves it. He’s either Lord of all, or not Lord at all.
