Big Buts Cannot Lie – Pt. 1

Introduction:
The phrase “But God” shows up a lot in scripture.  Why? The word “but” means “used to introduce something contrasting with what has already been mentioned.”
In this series, we will dive into all the “BIG BUTS” in the Bible….

Ice Breaker Questions:
-How good is your memory?  Were you good at remembering things when you were studying in college or high school?  What type of memory do you have (photographic, audible, short-term, long-term, etc.)?
-What’s the latest thing you forgot?  What’s the dumbest thing you forgot?
-Have you ever forgot something really important?
Genesis 8:1 (ESV)
The Flood Subsides
But God remembered Noah and all the beasts and all the livestock that were with him in the ark. And God made a wind blow over the earth, and the waters subsided.
Explanation:
-The Hebrew word translated as “remember is זָכַר zakar {zaw-kar’}.  It does mean remember but it also means “to call to mind.”  To call to mind means to intentionally think about.
-It is not that God forgot about Noah in the ark and all that he been through.  It was that once God was done doing what He said He would do, God brought His thoughts of Noah to the forefront to intentionally make a decision on what will happen next.
Discussion Questions:
1. Have you ever felt that God forgot about you in a situation?  Have you ever felt like He was thinking of other people and not you?
2. God is described as being “omniscient.”  That means that He is all-knowing.  So does He ever forget about you?  What would our thoughts/lives look like if we constantly call to mind that God is all-knowing?  How does that affect our faith?  How does that affect our decision making?
3. How would you feel if you were Noah at the time when God “remembered” him?  Remember what Noah had to do and go through up to this point.  How would a person of faith reconcile all that happened to him? (Hebrews 11:7***)
4. How would believing that God hasn’t forgotten about Noah affect the time between God told Noah to start building the ark (it took Noah 120 years to build the ark), and the time God caused the water to subside (Noah was on the ark for approximately 370 days)?
5. Share a moment when you thought God has forgotten about you but showed you that He always had you in His mind.  What’s a phrase we can all walk away with to remind us that He always has us on His mind and more?
