Summer Soul: A Building/Growing Soul
“Nine weeks of intense training to get you ready for your next season!!”
“You are not a body with a soul, you are a soul with a body.”
TODAY’S MAIN IDEA: Our soul is the muscle of our faith, which will be built through resistance, ripping and tearing, and finally renewal by God.
START THE CONVERSATION – QUESTIONS:
Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 3:6, “I (Paul) planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God has been making it grow.” List some of the people who planted seeds and helped you grow in your faith?
BIBLE READING: READ 1 Corinthians 3:1 – 17
The Church and Its Leaders
3:1 Brothers and sisters, I could NOT address you as people who live by the Spirit but as people who are still worldly—mere infants in Christ. 2 I gave you milk, not solid food, for you were not yet ready for it. Indeed, you are still not ready. 3 You are still worldly. For since there is jealousy and quarreling among you, are you not worldly? Are you not acting like mere humans? 4 For when one says, “I follow Paul,” and another, “I follow Apollos,” are you not mere human beings?
5 What, after all, is Apollos? And what is Paul? Only servants, through whom you came to believe—as the Lord has assigned to each his task. 6 I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God has been making it grow. 7 So neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God, who makes things grow. 8 The one who plants and the one who waters have one purpose, and they will each be rewarded according to their own labor. 9 For we are co-workers in God’s service; you are God’s field, God’s building.
10 By the grace God has given me, I laid a foundation as a wise builder, and someone else is building on it. But each one should build with care. 11 For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ. 12 If anyone builds on this foundation using gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay or straw, 13 their work will be shown for what it is, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each person’s work. 14 If what has been built survives, the builder will receive a reward. 15 If it is burned up, the builder will suffer loss but yet will be saved—even though only as one escaping through the flames.
16 Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in your midst? 17 If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy that person; for God’s temple is sacred, and you together are that temple.
BUILD A SOUL THROUGH:
RESISTANCE – A growing Soul WORSHIPS God.
God commands us to love him with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength. That certainly includes the bodies he’s given us. Examples throughout the bible of engaging physical worship include: clapping, singing, bowing, kneeling, lifting hands, shouting, playing instruments, dancing, and standing in awe. What grade would you give (A – F, same as school) to your freedom and ability to engage worship in a physical manner?
WORSHIP is often contrary to what the flesh wants because our flesh wants to be worshipped. What is the most challenging part for you to engage worship physically? Why do you think that is?
Additional SCRIPTURE ON WORSHIP
JOHN 4:24, Psalm 66:17, Psalm 100:1 – 5 , Psalm 143:6,
Psalm 150:6 (NIV)
RIPPING – A growing Soul SERVES God.
Zig Ziglar formula for success: “You will have everything you want, when you help others achieve what they want.” What is it about service that helps both the giver and receiver?
T.W. Mason, a famous pastor from the UK said, “In the Kingdom of God, service is not a stepping-stone to nobility: it is nobility, the only kind of nobility that is recognized.”
Additional SCRIPTURE ON SERVING
1 Corinthians 3:9 , Romans 12:10 – 11, Mark 9:35 (NIV)
Mark 10:45, Galatians 5:13, Philippians 2:5 – 7
RENEWING – A growing Soul is RENEWED by God.
A major component of renewal is rest, what are some ways that you rest and allow God to renew you? (And praying at the red light on your way to work, doesn’t count!!)
We talked about getting “Baby Skin” on our hearts? What do you think this means and why do you think it is necessary?
Additional SCRIPTURE ON RENEWAL
PSALM 23:3, ISAIAH 40:30 – 31, PSALM 51:10 – 12
Earlier tonight you listed people in your life that help plant faith as well as people who helped you grow in your faith. Sometime this week, take the time to reach out to some of these people and to thank them directly for their impact on your faith!!
As we talk about physically engaging our worship with God, state one way that you will take the next step in your worship.
Pray for three people in your life that need renewal?
