Romans 7:25 ESVThanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, I myself serve the law of God with my mind, but with my flesh I serve the law of sin.
As the dad of a 5 year old son, I have no doubt that he’s going to make mistakes as he grows up. Even though he (usually) tries his best to avoid them, making mistakes is an integral part of learning as he matures. But, like most parents, there’s nothing that bothers me more than when he tries to cover them up.
Take just a couple of minutes and read Romans 7:7-25. Paul’s complete honesty here is something we should all try and emulate. He starts off by making it very clear that God’s law in itself had no part in causing him to sin. He is emphatic that he both loves the law of God and hates the sin he finds himself in. He then goes on to admit that, as far as his flesh goes, he is unable to consistently control his actions and is only delivered from sin through Jesus.
When we act as though we have everything together all of the time, we’re not fooling anyone and, most importantly, we’re missing out on an opportunity to share one of the central messages of our faith. That even though we all struggle at times, we continue to fight — and it’s through Jesus Christ and the power of His Holy Spirit that we are able to come out on top in the end.
