ANTHEM: Live Life Loud

The Anthem of SAUL & DAVID – Part #2

It’s hard to live with Passion when you don’t know your Purpose for life.

ANTHEM – A rousing or uplifting song identified with a particular group, body, or cause.

TODAY’S MAIN IDEA: Don’t let Crowd define you, instead reveal God to the crowd.  Ultimate approval comes from God – let God’s Truth be the loudest.

Describe the highest place in regards to altitude that you have ever been and what you saw from that vantage point.  (Was it a mountain, a cliff, a bridge, a landmark like the Space Needle or Empire State Building, or perhaps even sky-diving?)

Describe one of your most memorable and favorite celebrations. (Was it a birthday, anniversary, birth of a child, an achievement like graduation, a job promotion).

Biblical Background: It all goes back to how it began – the Israelites complained that they didn’t have a king like other nations.  So they pleaded with God to provide a King.  The people VOTED Saul to be King – but Saul made some mistakes, he did not obey God, and ultimately God reject him.  On the other hand, David was CHOSEN by God via a prophet, that even his father overlooked.

READ 1 Samuel 18:5-16 (ESV)

5 And David went out and was successful wherever Saul sent him, so that Saul set him over the men of war. And this was good in the sight of all the people and also in the sight of Saul’s servants.

6 As they were coming home, when David returned from striking down the Philistine, the women came out of all the cities of Israel, singing and dancing, to meet King Saul, with tambourines, with songs of joy, and with musical instruments.[a] 7 And the women sang to one another as they celebrated,

“Saul has struck down his thousands,

and David his ten thousands.”

8 And Saul was very angry, and this saying displeased him. He said, “They have ascribed to David ten thousands, and to me they have ascribed thousands, and what more can he have but the kingdom?” 9 And Saul eyed David from that day on.

10 The next day a harmful spirit from God rushed upon Saul, and he raved within his house while David was playing the lyre, as he did day by day. Saul had his spear in his hand. 11 And Saul hurled the spear, for he thought, “I will pin David to the wall.” But David evaded him twice.

12 Saul was afraid of David because the Lord was with him but had departed from Saul. 13 So Saul removed him from his presence and made him a commander of a thousand. And he went out and came in before the people. 14 And David had success in all his undertakings, for the Lord was with him. 15 And when Saul saw that he had great success, he stood in fearful awe of him. 16 But all Israel and Judah loved David, for he went out and came in before them.

Additional Quotes from the sermon

This week Pastor Mike had many memorable quotes, including:

• Don’t let anyone be the expert of you (other than God)!!

• Our ‘Ultimate Purpose’ is to worship God.

• How can you be weak, if you are unique!!

• David didn’t have power, didn’t have position, but still had purpose.

• What you FEAR & LISTEN TO is your God (Idol Worship).

• Don’t let Crowd define you, instead reveal God to the crowd.

Which of these quotes do you find most encouraging and why?

Some define “success” as being the smartest, best, most powerful person in the room, while the bible states, “To be the greatest, you must be servant.”  How do you define “success”?  Specifically, how is that reflected in your own life?

Living on PURPOSE leads to LEGACY

Leaving a LEGACY is based upon MAKING AN IMPACT

MAKING AN IMPACT is based upon having and utilizing INFLUENCE.

In the above progression, what area are you doing the best in (Purpose, Legacy, Impact, or Influence)?  Conversely, what area, do you most need to grow in through God’s assistance?

1.)  Didn’t allow comparison to rob him from the PERSPECTIVE

Pastor Mike talked about ‘word curses’ and labels – the things that were said to you, that put plainly, were messed up!!  If you are willing, share with the group a word curse that you have struggled with (and or have overcome).  After all those who are willing to share, pause as a group, for a moment, and pray that God will help each person to let go of the burden of labels and embrace their true identity in Jesus and the fact that they are not a mistake!!

2.)  Didn’t allow comparison to rob him from the CELEBRATION

Describe your favorite celebration of what God has done in your life.  How do you commemorate it, did you include others in your celebration? (This is similar to the question from the opening, but the focus of this question is more on the God component – for some, the celebration will be the same answer as above, for others the focus on God may change the perspective of how they see various celebrations.)

3.)  Didn’t allow comparison to rob him from the COMMUNITY

Is there any part of comparison that prevents you from participating in any group or individual relationship? For example, you did not participate in some activity because you didn’t feel that you were good enough, or you did not engage someone socially or at work because you didn’t feel attractive.)

Pastor Mike encouraged each of us to, “Not let the crowd define you, instead reveal God to the crowd.”  What are some natural and organic ways, this week, that you can specifically ‘reveal God to the crowds’, without over overcompensating and trying too hard to prove yourself.

Ultimately, our approval comes from God and letting God’s Truth be the loudest.  What is one of God’s truths, that you feel led to share with someone else.  Be specific about the person, as well as the truth that you will share this week!!
