John 1:12 ESV

But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God.

Take a minute and ask yourself, what is it that makes you who you are?  Sure, after reading the above scripture, we all know the right answer.  But do our day-to-day actions portray someone whose true identity is in Christ?  Or is our self-worth coming from somewhere else?

I think every one of us has placed our identity in a spot where it doesn’t belong at some point.  But defining ourselves by the things of this world presents one huge problem — they can be taken away at any time.  So the business executive who falls into a deep depression after losing their job, the athlete who holds onto their career for too long or even the parent who struggles to find purpose as their children become independent, all find themselves feeling empty when life simply takes its course.

This is one of the reasons scripture continually reinforces our identity in Christ — to avoid the inevitable discouragement in defining who we are by the constantly changing world around us.  Take some time in prayer today to thank God for giving us our true, permanent identity as His own sons and daughters!
