START THE CONVERSATION – QUESTIONS:

Tonight’s DC is designed to be a night that your group hangs out and focuses on getting to know one another better.  In addition, your group has the opportunity to invite others to join your group (some opportunities are listed above).  You may take this opportunity to go out to do a social event, host a game night, or even have a movie night.

Included this week are some questions to help start the conversation, if you don’t already have a focus or activity.  Pastor Mike’s sermon was particularly deep and challenging this week, and your group may want to continue to focus on what was started this Sunday.  Therefore there is a review of the sermon along with some additional questions to consider and continue the conversation:

  • Have you ever met a famous person or someone you admired from afar? Describe your interaction. Did it live up to your expectations or were you surprised in any way?

  • What is the meaning of your name? If you do not know, take this moment to Google it on your phone to better understand the meaning of your full name, including your middle name.  How does it make you feel?

THIS WEEK’s SERMON CONTEXT

TODAY’S MAIN IDEA: Saul (particularly Jewish name) transformed into Paul (a particularly Roman name) in order to have greater influence. We have multiple versions of our self (Public, Comfortable, and Secret to name a few) that need to be unified in order have our greatest influence.

BIBLE READING:

Please READ Acts 13:1 – 13 (ESV) – Barnabas and Saul Sent Off

13:1 Now there were in the church at Antioch prophets and teachers, Barnabas, Simeon who was called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen a lifelong friend of Herod the tetrarch, and Saul. While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, “Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.” Then after fasting and praying they laid their hands on them and sent them off.

Barnabas and Saul on Cyprus

So, being sent out by the Holy Spirit, they went down to Seleucia, and from there they sailed to Cyprus. When they arrived at Salamis, they proclaimed the word of God in the synagogues of the Jews. And they had John to assist them. When they had gone through the whole island as far as Paphos, they came upon a certain magician, a Jewish false prophet named Bar-Jesus. He was with the proconsul, Sergius Paulus, a man of intelligence, who summoned Barnabas and Saul and sought to hear the word of God. But Elymas the magician (for that is the meaning of his name) opposed them, seeking to turn the proconsul away from the faith. But Saul, who was also called Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit, looked intently at him 10 and said, “You son of the devil, you enemy of all righteousness, full of all deceit and villainy, will you not stop making crooked the straight paths of the Lord?11 And now, behold, the hand of the Lord is upon you, and you will be blind and unable to see the sun for a time.” Immediately mist and darkness fell upon him, and he went about seeking people to lead him by the hand. 12 Then the proconsul believed, when he saw what had occurred, for he was astonished at the teaching of the Lord. 13 Now Paul and his companions set sail from Paphos and came to Perga in Pamphylia. And John left them and returned to Jerusalem,

What parts of the scripture passage stood out to you?  What part is the most encouraging?  What part is the most challenging?  What does this passage tell us about “IDENTITY”?

SAUL TO PAUL

  • Sometimes Obedience Requires RISK

Meaning of His Names

Saul = Asked For, Prayed For

Paul = Humble

  • PAUL took on a different identity for greater influence

Q: How many versions of you are there?

3 Possible Versions of self:

  • Public Version (Loveable)
  • Comfortable Version (Likeable)
  • Secret Version (Unlovable)

Q: What is my Public / Comfortable / Secret version?

Our various versions need unity, much like the three distinct elements of the trinity.

Q: How can we expect UNITY with others, if there is no unity in ourselves?  How can we better achieve unity with God?

There should be no PARTIAL SURRENDER, we should surrender “All of me”.

The various version requires confession, none more than the ‘Secret version’ of ourselves.
