Weekly Meet-Up RESOURCES

DATE: Sunday, July 22, 2018

Preached by Bob Riconda

CURRENT Series: PAUSE: Don’t Just Stop

SERMON TITLE: Rhythms of Sabbath

Tonight’s DMC is designed to be a night that your group serves the community by going OUT, as well as focusing on getting to know one another better in the process.  In addition, your group has the opportunity to invite others to join your group.  You may take this opportunity to go out to a local service project or join with those in the community, outside of your group in some capacity.

Included this week are some questions to help start the conversation, if you don’t already have a focus or activity.  In addition, there is a review of the sermon along with some additional Meet-Up Questions to consider:

REST is defined as, “The refreshing, renewing, and refueling pauses in life that we find in the rhythms of working with God.”

TODAY’S MAIN IDEA: Sabbath is God’s gift to reconnect with Him.

Question #1 (ICE BREAKERS):

  • Other than Christmas, Easter, or your birthday, describe a favorite day of the year? (ie Opening Day, Labor Day, An anniversary, Frist fruits from your garden, Fantasy Football draft, Arbor Day, etc.)  How is it different?  How do you set it a part and why?

Question #2 (SCRIPTURE):

  • What parts of the scripture passage from Exodus 20 & Deuteronomy 5 stood out to you, especially the slight differences between the two passages? What part is the most encouraging?  What part is the most challenging?

Question #3 (GENERAL):

  • Give some thought to what is it that gives you energy and replenishes us, and describe it the group.

  • Give some thought to what is it that reconnects you to God, and describe it the group.

Question #4 (ACTION):

  • Complete the “Worksheet on the Sabbath” – located in the APP under the Sunday Notes “Rhythm of Sabbath”. (Questions are also listed below in the Sermon Notes section)

  • Specify a day or time this week that you will start or increase your practice of Sabbath Rest.

Please READ EXODUS 20:8 -11 (ESV)

“Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor, and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, you, or your son, or your daughter, your male servant, or your female servant, or your livestock, or the sojourner who is within your gates. 11 For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.

Please READ DEUTERONOMY 5:12 – 15 (ESV)

12 “‘Observe the Sabbath day, to keep it holy, as the Lord your God commanded you. 13 Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 14 but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, you or your son or your daughter or your male servant or your female servant, or your ox or your donkey or any of your livestock, or the sojourner who is within your gates, that your male servant and your female servant may rest as well as you. 15 You shall remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and the Lord your God brought you out from there with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm. Therefore the Lord your God commanded you to keep the Sabbath day.

“The Sabbath was mas made for man, not man for the Sabbath.” – Jesus

 Holy = Different (Not religious)

1.) Sabbath is God’s Gift to REST

A.) It is a day to REINFORCE FAITH.

– Pressure, demands, work, busyness – All rob passion

– God invites us to rest through the gift of a break

B.) It is a day to RESTORE FAITH.

– All living things need a break.

C.) It’s a day to DELIGHT in GOD

– Rest in “the middle” – that’s the gift – not at the tale end.

– We rest because God said we could.

– Not about rules

Q: What is it that gives us energy and replenishes us?

Q: What is it that reconnects us to God?

2.) Sabbath is God’s Gift to REMEMBER

A.) It is a day to REINFORCE FAITH.

– God doesn’t need me, He invites me

– I’m not needed – God’s got it!

B.) It is a day to RESTORE FAITH.

– Sabbath puts life in perspective

– What activities drain you?

– What pulls you away from God?

– What do you have to do?

(CEASE from the necessary)

– What activities energize or invigorate you?

– What draws you toward God?

– What do you want to do if you had the time?

(EMBRACE that which gives)

The day I will try to proactive a Sabbath this week: __________________.
