Mark 2:27 ESV

And [Jesus] said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.”

I was at a restaurant the other day when I saw a baby — maybe 6 months old — playing with an iPhone.  While I’m sure the phone was meant to keep her entertained, she was going back and forth between completely ignoring it and trying to throw it across the room in frustration.  She just didn’t have the knowledge and maturity to use what had been given to her in the right way.

Jesus understood that although the Sabbath was intended to serve man, it can sometimes be difficult for us to put this concept into practice.  Scripture is clear that we desperately need to accept this gift of rest that God has given us to relax, recharge and return our focus to Him.  But we also need to be careful to use the gift properly — to stay in control of it as opposed to being filled with stress and worry about what we should and shouldn’t be doing on our Sabbath.

Make it your prayer today for God to give you His wisdom and discernment to use this gift to its fullest potential and allow it to grow and strengthen you in every area of your life!
