MEETUP WEEK #1 Format: MEET-UP Questions

TODAY’S MAIN IDEAIt is difficult to be distracted when you focus on Jesus.

Question #1 (ICE BREAKERS):

  • Pastor Mike described that we carry a smell of where we have been. When I was growing up, there was a Hallmark store that had a bakery (Peter Pan Bakery), and it smelled like glorious doughnuts the moment you walked through the door – one of my favorite memories as a kid.  Describe a place that you associate one of your favorite smells with.

Question #2 (SCRIPTURE):

  • What parts of the scripture passage from Matthew 14 stood out to you? What part is the most encouraging?  What part is the most challenging?  What does this passage teach us about “FOCUS”?

Question #3 (GENERAL):

  • What are you doing in your life, toward accomplishing your life’s purpose and goals?

  • When you die, what will ‘a successful life lived for God’ look like for you as an individual?

  • Pastor Mike said, “Ever frustration in your life is just a distraction.”  What are the distractions in your life that take you from God and God’s purpose in your life?  Also, how can you help others, as well as yourself, “Change the Narrative” to be better stay focused (and consequently less distracted.)?

Question #4 (ACTION):

  • As we examine the topic of focus, do you have a Personal Mission Statement. Take time this week to create (or review) your Personal Mission Statement.  This is a short statement that sums up what you as an individual and believer.

As a group, review the 7 Steps to building an Effective Mission Statement.  Click on the link below:

Please READ Matthew 14:22 – 33 (ESV) Jesus Walks on the Water

22 Immediately he made the disciples get into the boat and go before him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds. 23 And after he had dismissed the crowds, he went up on the mountain by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone, 24 but the boat by this time was a long way from the land, beaten by the waves, for the wind was against them.25 And in the fourth watch of the night he came to them, walking on the sea. 26 But when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified, and said, “It is a ghost!” and they cried out in fear. 27 But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, “Take heart; it is I. Do not be afraid.”

28 And Peter answered him, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.”29 He said, “Come.” So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water and came to Jesus. 30 But when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, “Lord, save me.” 31 Jesus immediately reached out his hand and took hold of him, saying to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” 32 And when they got into the boat, the wind ceased. 33 And those in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.”

– Sights and Sounds DISTRACT US

– Your own personal mission statement – it is your true north.

1.) It is difficult to be distracted when you are CLEAR ON YOUR PUPOSE.

– Things become more valuable, when they become limited.

– Without focus, distraction will overcome your life.

– Purpose (Doesn’t change) vs. Assignment (Temporary – will and can change)

– Calling dictates Assignment (Assignment should never dictate calling)

– Purpose is bigger than Assignment

2.) It is difficult to be distracted when you LIVE ON TRUTH.

– TRUTH: Bigger & Greater than facts.  Truth will always trump facts. (Expands possibilities) (Jesus is stronger than the waves)

– FACTS: What happened.  Temporary (Limited vision) (There are waves) (“If its His will, its His bill.”)

– Without focus, distraction will overcome your life.

– Every frustration in your life is a distraction.

– Change the narrative.

3.) It is difficult to be distracted when you are FOCUSED ON WHAT’S CLOSE (Proximity).

– Wind ceased when Jesus was closer.

– You know you’ve been with Jesus when you are focused.

– When you are more aware of Jesus, the harder it is to sin.

– Our thoughts to God: When I die, what will be success for you?
